Modern “Lady Skills”
A while ago, I read an article over at The Frisky detailing how today’s modern woman is losing her “lady skills” such as cooking, cleaning, and sewing. And against that accusation, I can’t really argue. More women these days under the age of 30 have a number of responsibilities and opportunities that older women, say our grandmothers, didn’t have as young women. Most of them were stay-at-home wives and moms, so they had time to hone in on their domestic skills. Contrarily, today’s young woman is a professional who works outside of the home, aiming to climb the corporate ladder or build her personal business. Yet and still, many modern women still desire the classic family set-up. They want the sexy handyman husband, the lovely, well-behaved children, the fabulous house with the picket fence, etc. But many will argue that they don’t have the time or energy to participate in the conventional “wifely duties.” I guess women’s lib did a lot to help and hurt us. Personally, I love to cook (when I have time) and can be a neat freak, but I must admit that it’s hard to balance being a champion at the office and being the domestic goddess at home. It can be quite a feat!
From time to time, I enjoy listening to the Mack Lessons Radio show hosted by Tariq Nasheed. Last night I listened to a podcast detailing “6 Reasons Why Men Won’t Commit” and what do you know? One of the reasons is because many women can’t or refuse to cook or keep a house. Maybe being so modern isn’t as liberating as we thought it would be. In The Frisky article, there was a list of “womanly” skills that some women who were interviewed claim they do possess. Some of them included being able to change her own flat tire, assemble furniture by herself, pay her bills on time, and multitask. Those “skills” are cool, but are they an even trade-off?
Sound off!
